What is Theory of Computation?

Theory of Computation (TOC) is a branch of Computer Science that deals with how problems can be solved using mathematical models of computation. It helps us understand what can be computed, how efficiently it can be computed, and the limitations of computation.

In simple words, TOC is the study of machines and languages – machines are abstract models like Automata, and languages are sets of strings that machines can recognize.

A set of valid strings formed over an alphabet.
👉 Example: L = {w | w contains equal number of 0s and 1s}

4. Automata

Abstract machines that help recognize patterns in strings.

5. Grammars and Chomsky Hierarchy

Languages are generated using rules (grammars). According to Chomsky, languages are divided into:

Type 0 – Recursively Enumerable Languages
Type 1 – Context Sensitive Languages
Type 2 – Context Free Languages
Type 3 – Regular Languages
